Forum Post: RE: Energy consumption comparison - Fixed speed pump vs Variable speed pump in SewerGEMS

That's why you run WaterGEMS/CAD to check on the energy costs. With constant speed pumping, you can run near the Best Efficiency Point (BEP) and then turn to the most efficient setting - OFF. With a VFD, the efficiency varies all over the place often to very poor points. The VFD automatically wastes about 5% of the energy just by having the power run through it. Then there is the purchase price of the VFD. A lot depends on the demand patterns and how the actual flows compare with the BEP flow of the pump(s). That's why it's best to run the calcs.

Background There are some cases where you have error messages such as, "Unexpected drawing version: 39" , where it helps to know what version of the software was used to create a model. Steps to Accomplish I will use WaterGEMS/CAD/HAMMER as an example here. Note that the file extension for the other programs is different, but you will only be opening the non-database project file (.stsw, .ppc, .swg, .swc, .csd, .fm8, or .stmc). Browse to the location/folder of the file that you want to view Right click on the .wtg file and select "Open with..." Now select some type of text editing software such as Notepad, Wordpad, Notepad ++, etc... Look for the third line of the file where it says, "ProductVersionLastModified =" and note the number of the software. Hi, I am trying to model the hydraulics of a water supply system with solar pump in WaterCAD. How do I provide the three point or multiple point pump curve (Flow and Head) for the solar pump? Since solar pump curves (provided by the pump manufacturers) are not same as other electrical pump, I am not sure how do I fit the pump curve for the solar pump system . Can anyone help me, please? Thanks in advance

What kind of pump mechanism is this (other than solar). Is it centrifugal, positive displacement,..)? The manufacturer should be able to provide you with some kind of performance curves showing, for example, head vs. flow (if it is centrifugal). Get that information from the manufacturer. Then we can discuss how to deal with it in a model.

Tom and Ken, Thank you for your opinions. In my case I have single pump station and it is connected to a force main. I'll try to compare that using WaterGEMS. Regards Nishadi

For the reference of other users, the error - "Unexpected Drawing versions: 40", occurs when you are trying to open the model i.e. saved in the more recent version of the software, than you are having. Here is the related support solution on that. communities.bentley.com/.../7495.unexpected-drawing-version-or-object-reference-error-when-opening-model

It could not be opened. ------------------------------------------------------------ OK ------------------------------------------------------------ Explanation This error may occur if the 64-bit version of the Haestad product has been installed along with a conflicting version of Microsoft Office. When installing the software on a 64-bit operating system, the program should detect the presence of the 32-bit version of Microsoft Office and force the software to install as a 32-bit application. The reason for is a Microsoft Office component called Access Database Engine. The 32-bit version of Microsoft Office will have the 32-bit version of the Access Database Engine. On rare occasions, the 32-bit version of the Access Database Engine is not properly idenified. When this occurs, the 64-bit version of the product is installed and used in the Desktop shortcut. Since the 64-bit version will conflict with the 32-bit version of the Access Database Engine, the error message is generated. This is a rare issue that will only occur the the SELECTseries 3 versions of the Haestad products and only on a 64-bit operating system with 32-bit Microsoft Office installed. Note that this problem will no longer occur, as of the SELECTseries 4 versions of WaterCAD, WaterGEMS and HAMMER (or later). The reason is because a SQLite database is now used instead of an Access Database, eliminating the dependency on the Access Database Engine for opening a file. This also applies to the SELECTseries 4 release of StormCAD, SewerCAD, SewerGEMS and CivilStorm. How to Avoid Primary Option: Upgrade to the latest version of the program The SELECTseries 4 and later versions of the Water products and the Storm and Sewer products will not see this issue. Upgrading to the latest version of the software will eliminate this error completely and provide you with all of the latest updates and tools the programs have to offer. You can find the steps to upgrade to the latest version at the following link: http://communities.bentley.com/products/hydraulics___hydrology/w/hydraulics_and_hydrology__wiki/8175.how-do-i-download-watergems-watercad-hammer-sewergems-sewercad-civilstorm-stormcad-pondpack-flowmaster-culvertmaster Secondary Option: Creating new shortcut to 32-bit version of the product If you cannot upgrade, the next best workaround is as follows: 1) Open My Computer and navigate to installation directory, typically similar to C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\(product name) 2) Open the .exe file (SewerGEMS.exe for SewerGEMS.) This is 32-bit version. 3) If the program opens without any error, right-click on the .exe and click on Copy. 4) Go to the Desktop, right-click, and select "Paste shortcut". Another variation of the above is described below: 1) Locate the programs icon on your desktop and right click on it. 2) Select "Properties" and click on the Shortcut tab. 3) Locate the target file path the program is pointing to and change it from: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\ \x64\ .exe" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\ \ .exe" . All you are doing is removing the "/x64" from the file path so the icon now points to the 32 bit executable. If 32-bit version of the Haestad product could not open from the program files directory, try reinstalling it. If you must use the 64-bit version of your Haestad product (such as for integrating with the 64-bit version of AutoCAD), then this workaround will not work. Other Options Also, you have the following other options, the above steps are not feasible: 1) Upgrade to the SELECTseries 4 version of the product. A SELECTseries 4 release of all Water, Storm, and Sewer products is now available. This is option is highly recommended since the SELECTseries 4 release of the products will install as a 64-bit application on any 64-bit Windows machine. 2) Uninstall 32-bit Office 3) Upgrade to 64-bit Office 4) Install the 64-bit version on a Virtual Machine (such as Windows 7's "XP Mode") 5) Try forcing the Haestad product installer to only install the 32-bit version. Details can be seen here . This option won’t work if you need the 64-bit version for some reason, such as for AutoCAD integration. 6) Try uninstalling the 64-bit Access Database Engine, then change the Haestad product shortcuts to point to the 32-bit version (the .exe under the root folder, not the x64 folder). Again, this won’t help if you need to integrate with 64-bit AutoCAD. 7) Try uninstalling Microsoft Office completely (including the 32-bit Access DB engine), then reinstall the Haestad product, then reinstall Office. The conflict happens when the 64-bit MS Access database engine is installed second, so this may work. IMPORTANT: this workaround is not tested so we cannot guarantee it will work. See Also Sometimes the error could be occurring because of unregistered DAO. Wiki Page: How to model timed pump starts, such as a certain on-and-off cycles per hour

$

Product(s): Bentley SewerCAD, Bentley WaterGEMS, Bentley WaterCAD Version(s): 08.11.xx.xx Environment: N\A Area: Modeling Problem Is it possible to model a pump so that it cycles on and off over a certain time span? The time starts and stops do not tend to vary, and could be something like cycling 8 times in an hour. Solution With WaterGEMS, WaterCAD, and SewerCAD, you can also set up logical controls based on Clock Time or Simulation Time. The controls for this are found under Components > Controls. Note that if you are using SewerCAD with this type of control, you would need to set the pump property "Ignore On and Off Elevations" to True. Otherwise the program will use the "Elevation (Off)" and "Elevation (On)" properties in the pump. However, this might not be the best solution. Instead, you may want to apply a control that turns the pump on and off based on the tank water level or elevation. This is a more typical control for pumps, and most like the pumps in the field operate based on the level of a tank. To get the pump to cycle the number of times you require may take a little trial-and-error. Set up the control so that the pump turns on at a certain tank elevation and turns off at another elevation. Then compute the model and see how often the pump cycles on and off. If the number of times is too small or too large, adjust the tank control elevations and compute again. The advantage to this workflow is that you need to model a change in demand (for WaterGEMS or WaterCAD) or load (for SewerCAD) the pumps will operate according the changes in the tank that would occur rather than a hardcoded control based only on time. Forum Post: Changing Diameter in Auto-Design

I have noticed that in SewerCad (Auto-design) the program change the diameter to larger pipes despite the pipe does not reach to full? i.e. we give minimum and maximum slope in the design constrains; and I expect the program to use higher slop (within the given ranges); doing that will maintain the diameter, in other word I do not expect the program to do the engineering in one click but at least this is major issue because when I increased the slope manually little bit I could keep the same diameter, so why the program does not increase the slope till the d/Dfull=80% and after that should change to the bigger size at minimum slope and start the new iteration..!!!! Hi Sushma, unfortunately; I do not think those links answer my question, I understand there are many priorities but what I mentioned is the design core with respect to the other parameters, eventually we should meet the parameters and have optimized sizing, and if I need to do manually then we use the excel instead !!

Mohamad, It is possible that this is related to pipe travel time as explained in this article: communities.bentley.com/.../10402.why-is-stormcad-over-designing-the-conduits-during-a-design-run-on-a-system-with-very-shallow-slopes However if this does not help, we'll need to see a copy of the model. Hello Sayed, That is a pretty large flow being captured. The spread and depth are calculated using standard HEC-22 equations. See Help topic "Surface Gutter System" in the Theory section of the help, specifically the topic "Grate Inlet in Sag". You can also find some information in our wiki here: How does StormCAD/Flowmaster compute the depth and spread for a grate inlet in sag? I set up a quick worksheet with 1% slopes assumed and see somewhat similar results: If this does not help, please provide a copy of the model files (.STSW and .STSW.SQLITE files if using the latest version of StormCAD). Applies To Product(s): Bentley SewerCAD, Bentley SewerGEMS Version(s): 08.11.03.77, 08.11.03.83, 08.11.03.84 Environment: N/A Area: Modeling Subarea: Original Author: Scott Kampa, Bentley Technical Support Group Problem Description After computing automated design, the following user notification appears, even though I have section sizes available in the Conduit Catalog. The inverts and sizes of the conduits identified by this notification do not change. "Conduit Catalog should contain conduits that are available for design and with same Conduit Shape/Material. Set Design Conduit property to False, or add new conduits to Catalog." Steps to Resolve In these versions of SewerCAD (or when using the GVF Convex solver in SewerGEMS) you must set your conduits property of 'Conduit Type' to "Catalog Conduit" if you would like the automated design feature to attempt to design the inverts and sizes. If you have them set to "User Defined", the sizes and inverts will not be changed. When set as a catalog conduit, the automated design routine will select specific sizes from the conduit catalog that are marked as available for design. If you need to change multiple conduits to Catalog Conduits, consider the below steps to global edit the conduits: 1) Open the conduit flextable and add the Conduit Type, Section Size and Material fields if not already showing 2) Global edit the Conduit Type field and set them all to Catalog Conduit 3) Global edit the Material field and set them all to the appropriate material 4) Global edit the Section Size field and set them all to an initial size. The automated design feature will adjust the size as needed, so the size you pick here does not matter. 5) Re-compute automated design. Note: Enhancement # 374316 has been filed for the ability for automated design to size pipes which are initially set as user defined. This will be evaluated for a future release.

I was doing a Fire Flow analysis and wanted to query my results by "Fire Flow (Available) (gpm)" - as suggested in another topic. I opened the Fire Flow Node Query Builder and in the "Fields" pick box, scrolled down to "Fire Flow (Available) (gpm)" and double-clicked on it to add it to the query string box. In the query string box, instead of showing "Fire Flow (Available) (gpm)", it shows "IdahoFireFlowResults_AvailableFireFlow"! See the image below. Anyone else have this happen? What gives? (By the way, I'm nowhere near Idaho, I'm in Fl)
